Moving forward with my motown idea i need to consider the main photo i will use for my background, this photo is a very important eliment as it is the first thing that will catch the audiences attention, the colour used in this photo needs to relate to my target audience therefore fairly nutral or non gendre bias colours such as yellows, browns, creams etc. (convieniently typical motown colours) :). This photo i was to include a well known artist, group or solo, so that the viewer will immediatly understand the genre of magazine this is. Here are some initial photo ideas that i like.
During uploading these photos i realised i really like two ideas, one being black and white main photograph with very colourfull retro colours for the font/text. And the other being A very colourfull photo with very colourfull font/text aswell. Motown is associated with very bright vibrant colours therefore this HAS to be portrayed through my front cover so the reader knows automatically what this magazine is about. They need to be satisfied therefore i need to consider the uses and gratification theory and the codes and conventions of the genre in order to get the correct response and first impressions from the reader. People expect the typical well known artists of motown such as stevie wonder, the temptations and the jackson 5 to appear on the front cover but want the photo too appear like its been taken for that magazine. This is because it interacts with the reader on a higher level, if you just recognise the picture from a CD cover or all over the internet it reduces your exitement when viewing and analysing the cover photo. On the other hand if you have a posing photo that looks like it was produce for this magazine the reader will feel that the artist is also interested in the production of the magazine they appear in and therefore adds interest to the reader. In this case, obviously motown is a retro genre, therefore it is known to the reader that the photo will not be taken specifcally for this magazine, but an image where the artists appear to interact with you, such as eye contact and posing will accomplish the same principle.
MY FAVOURITE PHOTO COVER CHOICE.
The reason for this choice is because it involves the above; of having interaction, lots of bright colour yet keeping it neutral so avoid gender bias and looks like a typical magazine photo with the band positioned ready for a photo with poses and eyecontact creating that interaction with the audience. Tito appearing at the top i would like to use as the first O of MOTOWN, i think this will add quirkiness and abit of comedy from the use of their afro's yet allowing the audience to still immediatly recognise the word.
Using word i began playing around with that photo and adding a title too it, coming across a font i really liked, that you associate with motown, as most CD's, DVD's etc have a simular font for motown. I tried a variation of brightly colours titles from illuminois yellows to oranges. This is what it came out like. The MASTHEAD is the first mode of address therefore needs to instantly be recognisable to the genre of the magazine, I believe this has achieved that.
